The singer with vocal cord polyps with squeaking voice when singing
Today I received a referral from the speech pathologist at our Center. This is a case of a teacher and choral singer who was diagnosed with bilateral vocal cord polyps. Her main complaint was constant hoarse voice and inability to hit high notes when singing which she was always able to do in the past. In addition, she demonstrated severe dryness of the throat and squeaking voice when singing over an A or middle C , as well as tightness in the upper throat and difficulty sleeping at night. She had to chew gum and drink water constantly to keep her throat moist. Her first treatment of acupuncture to help restore the moisture in the throat and to decrease the inflammation due to overuse of the vocal cords. We were both happily surprised with the results. She noticed immediate restoration of moisture in the throat and less tightness. During her second treatment she told me that she felt moisture in her throat and didn’t feel the need to use the chewing gum or water. She also reported a significant improvement in the quality of her voice.
